Deadmau5, aka Joel Zimmerman, is a Toronto-based electro house producer and DJ. He is currently ranked #11 in the DJ Mag Top 100 DJ’s and his tracks have reached the number one spot on Beatport’s charts 13 times.
His work has earned him Beatport Music Awards for Best Electro House Artist, Best Progressive House Artist, Best Single of 2007 (for ‘Not Exactly’), and The Most Influential, Forward-thinking and Relevant Person in Electronic Music in 2007.
He started his mau5trap [l] label in July, 2007 and began a couple side projects with a few other friends and producers. Combined with Steve Duda, the duo has released several tracks under the BSOD alias. His other project, WTF?, consists of himself, Tommy Lee, DJ Aero, and Steve Duda.
When Deadmau5 performs live he uses a touchscreen Lemur, Monome midi controller, Ableton Live, and various plugins and other pieces of hardware and is able to recreate his productions in the live atmosphere. In addition to his intricate gear, he always performs wearing a huge mouse head. ‘Random Album Title’, his first studio album, was released September 2, 2008 on Ultra Records and contains 12 tracks along with a mixed version of the entire album.
